With 401 votes, the European Parliament has re-confirmed Ursula von der Leyen as President of the European Commission.

Mélanie Auvray – Policy Manager at the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) – comments:

“We congratulate EU Commission president von der Leyen on her re-election and support her aim to boost clean tech and low-carbon technologies.

The heat pump sector is already a leading net zero player with over 200 manufacturing sites in Europe, but with recent sales dropping, it is critical that policy support is strengthened.

We urge the incoming EU Commission to publish the much-delayed EU Heat Pump Action rapidly. Doing so will boost a sector which meets the goals President von der Leyen laid out: competitiveness, energy independence and cleaner industry on the path to net zero.”

Central to von der Leyen’s vision, when it comes to energy and climate, are two initiatives: a new Clean Industrial Deal to drive decarbonisation and industrial growth, and the creation of a European Competitiveness Fund to boost innovation and market development across the continent.

Earlier this year, EHPA published a manifesto with its main policy priorities for the next Commission and Parliament.

What’s next?

After the summer break, EU governments will propose a list of candidates to become Commissioners, with every Member State nominating one candidate. MEPs will then conduct confirmation hearings to evaluate each nominee for their respective roles.

In autumn, the European Parliament will vote to approve or reject the composition of the Commission College.
