The European Commission’s 2024 State of the Energy Union report is out.
It shows that the heating and cooling sector is currently not on track to decarbonisation by 2050. While the EU’s current laws and rules are important, they are not yet enough.
The main takeaways on heating and cooling are as follows:
- – The renewable energy share in heating and cooling increased by only 6.3% between 2012 and 2022. At this rate, the EU won’t meet the binding 2030 target of 42.5% until 2050! Member states need to step up and set more ambitious targets.
- – Fossil fuel boilers still dominate the EU heating market, despite steady growth in clean heat technologies like heat pumps, and a trade surplus of €1.3bn for heating and cooling networks.
- – Renovations and the electrification of heating equipment are not happening fast enough, and the EU is currently not on track to reach a decarbonised building stock by 2050.
EHPA is calling for a faster roll-out of heat pumps as the number one step to accelerate the decarbonisation of the heating and cooling sector.
