President von der Leyen brought up three key issues linked to the heat pump sector in her State of the Union speech today. These are energy independence built on clean technologies, a steady commitment to the Green Deal, and a fairer energy system with lower costs for citizens and industry.
“Heat pumps contribute to all the priorities raised in today’s speech: they cut emissions, lower bills, and strengthen energy independence for both buildings and industry – all while creating skilled jobs in Europe. Thorough national implementation of the rules and targets we already have, and strong supportive measures in upcoming proposals will determine how great a part heat pumps play,” said Paul Kenny, Director General of the European Heat Pump Association.
The President of the European Commission highlighted the importance of the Clean Industrial Deal, but its impact will only be felt if implementation is rapid and robust, to ensure market stability.
She also said that what drives energy costs down is clean, home-grown energy. At the same time, electricity must be made competitive with gas to ensure the switch to 100% green electricity from wind and solar power takes place, including in the heating sector.
Looking ahead, the EU Electrification Action Plan and the Clean Heating and Cooling Strategy will be decisive in shaping the pace of the transition. In turbulent times, heat pumps are not just a solution – they are Europe’s trusted path forward.
