What is the latest in electrification technologies? How about demo projects? What’s going on in the world of open, modular energy management services that help integration and interoperability across different energy systems?

An Horizon Europe funded project, META BUILD, gathered its 40 partners for a three-day meeting in Bolzano, Italy, hosted by the Eurac Research Institute, marking an important step forward in the decarbonisation of buildings.

Discussions focused on progress in brine-to-water heat pumps, district heating, hybrid systems, and second-life battery use in ongoing projects in Austria, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, and Spain, which showcase their implementation in real-world settings.

The meeting also addressed other important open issues, such as partner roles and financial considerations for pilot projects. Partners shared updates on the challenges faced, particularly those related to regulatory environments, stakeholder engagement, and the installation of technologies.

A special focus was placed on a hybrid solar panel project being developed by the consortium which aims to deliver both electricity and heat from a single panel, with prototypes expected soon.

The next steps will be about defining interoperability interfaces, with an emphasis on developing open application programme interfaces (APIs) to ensure seamless communication between systems. In parallel, efforts will continue to advance prototypes, placing particular attention on the challenges of installation and integration across diverse regulatory frameworks within the European Union.

About META BUILD

META BUILD is a Horizon Europe-funded project focused on decarbonising Europe’s building sector through the electrification of heating and cooling systems, flexible energy services, and digitalisation of energy management. The project brings together a diverse group of partners to demonstrate and implement cutting-edge technologies in real-world scenarios.
