On 19th October, 2018, Leonardo Energy, an European Copper Institute project, released the White Paper: Heat Pumps  - Integrating Technologies to Decarbonise Heating and Cooling. This special report, written by Thomas Nowak, EHPA Director, shed light on the technology fundamental principles, the renewable and waste-energy based sources used, the achievement in financial and energy efficiencies, the business models being deployed, and the non-technical benefits for the environment and society.

 

This publication is directed both at policy-makers and industry players, providing a unique overview of the state of the art of this sector. Despite, the underlying concept is known for over 150 years, only recently heat pumps are being deployed in large numbers. In fact, heat pump technology can deliver major economic, environmental and energy system benefits to Europe, and it may be the single most efficient technology for heating and cooling. In particular, the report focuses on the integrative function that heat pumps provide for decarbonizing the heating and cooling sector, explaining the reason why heat pump technology should become a central component of Europe‚Äôs future energy system.
